An 18-year-old gypsy bride’s dream wedding ended in a violent and bloody street fight between a bridesmaid and the groom’s aunt that had to be broken up by the police.
Romani Gypsy Alyssa and her groom Heath, from West Virginia, were forced to flee their own wedding in order to avoid a confrontation with the cops – who were called in to break up the angry brawl between Heath’s aunt Mellie and Alyssa’s cousin and bridesmaid Diamond.
In footage from TLC reality series Gypsy Brides US, the two women are seen throwing punches in the street just minutes after the couple’s ceremony ended, when Diamond overheard Mellie threatening to attack the bride over claims that she had been spreading rumors about her mother-in-law.
‘If she comes out here or comes over here and looks at me, I swear to God I’m going to f***ing kill her,’ Diamond tells the cameras while standing out in the street, seconds before confronting Mellie when she stepped outside to smoke.
Here comes the fight! An 18-year-old gypsy bride’s dream wedding descended in violence when her bridesmaid (right) got into a bloody street fight with the groom’s aunt (left)
Squaring off: The fight began when bridesmaid Diamond (right) overheard the groom’s aunt Mellie (left) saying that she was going ‘stretch out’ the bride because of a previous argument
Violence: The brawl, which was featured in TLC reality series Gypsy Brides US, began when Diamond confronted Mellie outside of the Virginia courthouse where the wedding took place
War wounds: Diamond shoved Mellie to the ground, before being tackled to the floor herself, and the women began beating one another, leaving the bridesmaid with a bloody nose
‘Mellie comes walking down the stairs behind me talking to herself saying, “I can’t stand fake a** people.” Well f**k, you got it,’ Diamond explained.
The bridesmaid then begins screaming at Mellie, demanding to know why she was saying she was going to ‘stretch Alyssa out’ and demanding that she ‘get out’ before shoving her to the ground in front of several horrified bystanders.
Mellie then knocks Diamond to the floor and the women begin slapping, punching, and scratching one another – leaving the bridesmaid with a bloody nose and the groom’s aunt with a bloody lip and cuts all over her legs – before family members step in to break them up and Heath screams at his aunt to ‘leave’ his wedding.
Despite taking much of the focus of the big day away from the bride and groom, neither woman seems repentant after their fight – with Diamond defiantly insisting to the cameras that she ‘won’.
‘Everybody knows who won, I mean I got the best out of her,’ she says. ‘When I pushed Mellie against the bricks, I hope I broke every bone in her body. When I’m mad, I go for the kill.
‘If she said she had a reputation, she don’t got none now. If Mellie wants round two, she can have it. I’ll be standing like a champ. Like Mike Tyson.’
Meanwhile Mellie, who is seen trying to clean up the blood from her face and legs, brags that Diamond is ‘busted up more than her’, boasting: ‘Her face is all messed up, it was pouring with blood.’
Devastated: Bride Alyssa (left) and her groom Heath (right) were forced to make a quick escape from their own ceremony in order to avoid a confrontation with the cops
Threats: Mellie had threatened to ‘beat up’ bride Alyssa, after the teenager was accused of spreading rumors about her mother-in-law’s love life
Retreat: Despite causing chaos at the ceremony, Diamond and Mellie were both unrepentant, and each woman claimed that she had ‘won’ the fight
Injuries: Mellie was left with bruises and cuts all over her legs after Diamond shoved her into a brick wall and onto the floor
Escape: Alyssa (right) was then forced to flee her wedding ceremony when the cops were called by a bystander who witnessed the fight
Despite her injuries, Mellie continues to threaten newlywed Alyssa, warning: ‘[Diamond] thinks she needs to defend her cousin. But what Diamond got… it isn’t even half of what Alyssa’s going to get.’
But her threats prove to be empty – at least for the time being – when the entire wedding party is thrown out of the local courthouse as a result of the brawl, and the bride and groom are then forced to make a quick escape when the police arrived to deal with the violent fight.
Although dramatic, the brawl was just the latest in a long line of upsets for the bride and groom – whose families disapproved of their union from the start, with many of their relatives, including their parents, refusing to attend the ceremony.
At the beginning of the episode of the TLC show, which originally aired in 2012, but has been re-broadcast in recent weeks, prompting the clip to go viral on YouTube, Alyssa is seen attending her wedding dress fitting without her mother, who she says is refusing to be involved in the nuptials.
Surrounded by three of her and Heath’s ‘closest cousins’, who are also serving as her bridesmaids, Alyssa admits that she is upset that her mother is not there to experience the milestone moment with her.
‘I love my dress, I feel like a princess in it, but I really wish my mom could have came to see my dress for the first time,’ she confesses. ‘I would have really loved to have shared that moment with my mom but she don’t want nothing to do with it.’
Boast: Mellie insisted that she had ‘won’ the fight, bragging that Diamond’s face was ‘all messed up’ and ‘pouring with blood’
Bitter: Both of the women refused to apologize, despite ruining the bride and groom’s event
Threat: Mellie insisted that she wasn’t going to let her feud with Alyssa go, warning that Diamond ‘only got half of what Alyssa is going to get’
Anger: Groom Heath was seen screaming at his aunt to ‘leave’ his wedding, before being forced to make a quick escape himself in order to avoid a meeting with the cops
Alyssa’s dressmaker, who regularly works with gypsies, explains that it is very rare for a bride to attend a fitting without her mother, particularly because Romani women do not usually leave the house without their mom to escort them.
The days before the couple’s wedding was due to take place, they faced another blow when Heath’s mom kicked them out of her house because she had been told that Alyssa had been spreading rumors about her love life.
‘[Apparently] she couldn’t stand to be around me? And I thought I was being good to that little girl,’ Heath’s mother Nettie, fumes, while pulling Alyssa’s clothes out of the closet and packing them up.
‘I had found out that Alyssa had been going over to my daughter-in-law and talking about how many men I’ve had. I could count on one hand how many men I’ve had.
‘That child is going to go run her mouth about me? She didn’t have to cook, she didn’t have to clean, she didn’t even have to make her own bed. And that wasn’t good enough for her?
‘I thought Alyssa was a really good girl and nobody could have ever told me any different. But now I see that Alyssa is a hateful child, the devil in disguise.’
She then insists that her anger towards Alyssa has nothing to do with the fact that she is a Romani Gypsy, suggesting that her future daughter-in-law is behaving in a way that she has never experienced from other women in their culture.
‘I have been around Romanis everywhere, from here, from one side of this United States to another, and I have never ever seen so bad of a troublemaker than that little girl,’ she tells her sister – Heath’s aunt – Mellie.
Bittersweet: Alyssa and Heath’s families both expressed disapproval over their nuptials, and the bride’s mother refused to be involved in the wedding or even attend the dress fitting
Heartache: ‘I love my dress, I feel like a princess in it, but I really wish my mom could have came to see my dress for the first time,’ Alyssa confessed to the cameras
Keep calm and carry on: Despite their parents furious disapproval of the event, Alyssa and Heath were determined to go ahead with their wedding, with only their cousins attending
Stand-in: Alyssa’s father did not attend the ceremony, so she asked a friend to give her away
Outrage: Days before the wedding, Heath’s mother – Mellie’s sister – Nettie kicked the couple out of her house, claiming that Alyssa had been spreading cruel rumors about her love life
‘She is a liar, manipulator, conniving, evil. She is not safe to be around, and I’m not going to the wedding.’
Nettie’s sister – Heath’s aunt – is left furious by Alyssa’s actions, and tells her sibling that she is going to exact revenge on the bride at the wedding, warning: ‘Oh I’m going. As soon as the man says, “Do you object?” I’m going to say, “Yes I do,” and then I’m running down there and beating the s**t out of her.’
Despite the bitter feud between his mother and his future wife, determined Heath, who earns a living tarmacking roads, remains unfazed by his family’s furious disapproval of his marriage – and says he is determined to support his bride and create a life for them having turned his own around after a stint in jail.
‘I feel like a new man,’ he tells the cameras. ‘I feel like reformed criminal. Old Heath was a wild, reckless kind of guy, he loved to fight and he loved to party.’
But as a result of his mother kicking the couple out of her home, they are forced to stay in a motel for the night before their wedding, something that neither of them had expected.
‘Everybody’s turning on us, and I don’t know what to do about it,’ Heath confesses. ‘I don’t know if it’s because they don’t want us together, or they just don’t like my wife.’
Alyssa admits she never thought she would be ‘staying the night in a hotel alone with nobody to support us’ days before her wedding.
